I want to change my URL from bushfiresafetyjoanwebster.wordpress.com to joanwebster.wordpress.com b

I want to change my URL from bushfiresafetyjoanwebster.wordpress.com
to joanwebster.wordpress.com but I am having trouble.
I don’t understand what ‘Matching Username’ means and what my options mean.
In trying to change my URL, I receive the message ‘Only lowercase letters (a-z) and numbers are allowed.’ But I have used only lowercase: joanwebster.wordpress.com
I understand that when my URL has been changed my current URL will be permanently disabled.
    Can you help me, please?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • > I don’t understand what ‘Matching Username’ means
If you username is joankwebster then WordPress.com reserves joankwebster.wordpress.com for you. So nobody, other than you, can have joankwebster.wordpress.com.

Some users won’t use their reserved blog addresses. Say my username may be xyz but my blog name could be abc.wordpress.com. I haven’t yet used xyz.wordpress.com. Meanwhile WordPress.com prevents anyone else from taking xyz.wordpress.com. It is either mine or nobody’s.

    > In trying to change my URL, I receive the message ‘Only lowercase letters (a-z) and numbers are allowed.’ But I have used only lowercase: joanwebster.wordpress.com
I am not sure how this is possible if you are already using only lowercase letters to the new address.

This depends on what you choose at step 7 of blog address change process you will find at https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Thank you for explaining these aspects to me.
However, I am still not able to change my URL from bushfiresafetyjoanwebster.wordpress.com
    to joanwebster.wordpress.com

I am still trying to change my WordPress URL from bushfiresafetyjoanwebster.wordpress.com to joanwebster.wordpress.com. Although I use only lower case letters to insert this in ‘New Blog/Site Address’, I receive a message ‘lower case letters allowed’. This happened as soon as I insert the dot after ‘joanwebster’. The need to make this change is urgent. Please tell me how to correct this problem and proceed with the URL change.

  • If I try to access joanwebster.wordpress.com, I see the following message.

    joanwebster.wordpress.com doesn’t exist

The address joanwebster.wordpress.com cannot be registered. Sorry, that site is reserved!

Could you confirm what is your username?

The above message means someone has taken the username joanwebster. So unless it is you, you can’t register joanwebster.wordpress.com. You will have to settle for a different site name.

My user name is joankwebster. My email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff). It is the site address, the URL , that I want to change from bushfirejoanwebster.wordpress.com to joanwebster.wordpress.com. You suggest, above, that the reservation of the address joanwebster.wordpress.com could, in fact, be reserved to myself. If so, how can I retrieve and use it? Please answer as urgently as possible.

From reading the above, it sounds to me like joankwebster.wordpress.com (with your username that has the “K” in it) is reserved for you and that joanwebster.wordpress.com (without the “K”) may belong to someone else….?

What is the difference between a Site Address and a Web Address?
My Web Address is registered as http://joanwebster.wordpress.com.
    Site Address is bushfiresafetyjoanwebster.wordpress.com
I want my Site Address to be http://joanwebster.wordpress.com, the same as my Web Address. How do I do this?

What will happen if I redirect my site to one with a new name?
    Urgent answer needed.

  • Generally site address and web address are same. People just call it differently. It is also called URL, a technical term.

You can’t have your site address as joanwebster.wordpress.com/ because it is reserved for the user with username joanwebster.

You can, however, pick a new address that is not taken or not reserved for anybody else.

As my Web Address is registered as joanwebster.wordpress.com, how can joanwebster.wordpress.com be reserved for someone else?

“When a WordPress.com user signs up for an account we reserve the URL of their username. So if they signed up for the username of exampleuser we would reserve exampleuser.wordpress.com for them. “

On April 24, 2014 someone with the name “joanwebster” (no K)
joined and the website joanwebster.wordpress.com was reserved for them: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/joanwebster
but not used. Is this you also?

When I look at your member profile: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/joankwebster
I do see joanwebster.wordpress.com listed as your website.

If you aren’t user joanwebster (no K), I’m not smart enough to explain this other than I think you can associate other sites with your profile that you don’t necessarily own and maybe you did that while setting up your profile? Perhaps Chaitanyamsv will enlighten us.

(I changed my username at some point and my old abandoned username profile looks very much like the joanwebster (no K) profile and the Member Since date for it is way wrong.)
