i want to configure my website so it looks and reads like a book.

I want to configure my site with a prologue, chapter index, possibly even a page index so that readers can directly access any part they want.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there edparmenter,
Have you read the support document, Write a Book? It just might be solution to your question.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn’t really help. I need to know when i have enough content so that I can start another page in the chapter. I want to create a real book with multiple pages per chapter and multiple chapters, with either footnotes or end notes, not a succession of blog posts. Possibly I need a different web host.

The best we can offer here at wordpress.COM has been linked to above. For web hosting see http://wordpress.org/hosting/
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page -

For what you want to do my answer is yes. That’s because the only option we have at wordpress.COM has already been posted above.

Hi edparmenter,
Content on the web is read differently than content in print. For that reason, the way you display content on your website will be different than you would for print.
To create multiple chapters on WordPress.com I would recommend using the NextPage option in your posts or pages as outlined here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/You may also be interested in a theme like the Chapters theme which is displayed like a book:
https://wordpress.com/themes/chapters/As mentioned, you could also create a more verbose system to match your needs by using the WordPress software found at WordPress.org on your own server. Yet, before you make that decision I would encourage you to learn a bit about managing a self-hosted WordPress site.
