I want to create a website with a name

    I want to create a website with a name that someone has taken. But the only thing is the fact that the website name is taken and there’s nothing created on the website which is Identified as created over 10 years ago. The name is perfect for the project I’m working on. What are my options? Thank you.

    Hi there,

    Currently, WordPressdotcom websites do not expire no matter when the last entry was posted on the site.

    Your only option is to contact the site owner through an open contact form or comment form on that site and ask them to transfer the site to you. If they agree, you can point them to this support guide on transferring site ownership to another WordPressdotcom account: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

    If they do not reply to your request or do not agree, there is nothing further that can be done.

    The above depends that the site is active and has not been deleted by the author or suspended for a possible Terms of Service violation.

    If the site was deleted by the author, the name may become available 2 years or so after deletion provided it does not involve any technical conflict, like a username of that same name. More about recycling deleted sites here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

    Having said that, if you purchase a custom domain using that name, like mygroovysite.com, it doesn’t matter what the underlying WordPressdotcom site URL is.
