I want to delete anything associated with my e-mail address.

All Iwanted to do was answer an article on Pro Football Talk, but the next thing I knew I had accounts with worldpress and blogs etc. I just want to delete my email address from all of this nonsense and pretend it never happened, but I keep reading that you can’t fully “delete” accounts.

You are right, you can’t delete your WordPress.com account. This is for security reasons so others cannot claim your username and impersonate you. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/
However, the only information you needed to give to sign up was your email address and WordPress does not send out spam or sell that address to third parties. See: http://automattic.com/privacy/
If you really want to sever all connections, the best option is to create a throwaway email address with a free webmail client like Gmail or Yahoo or similar. Change the email for WordPress to that one (http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-address/) and change your password to something very secure. See Timethief’s instructions in this thread for more information on this: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/delete-account-276?replies=2
If you created a blog you don’t want, see here for instructions to delete it: http://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/
