Your options are between mapping the domain or transferring the domain name over to WordPress.com.
Domain mapping creates a connection to WordPress.com but the domain itself remains registered with your current provider — and will therefore need to be renewed through them each year:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
Transferring the domain to WordPress.com means it will be renewed through WordPress.com each year. This is the better option if you want to manage the domain and site through one account:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
