I want to get rid of the (totally worthless) block editor on a free install
-
This means I need to create a Child Theme then update the functions.php.
I am guided to wp-content/themes but lots of experimentation takes me nowhere.
I am thinking that simply recreating my blog with a non wp provider would be easier.
Any guidance would be appreciated.Thanks!

You can still switch to the classic editor when writing/editing posts/pages in your site’s Dashboard: https://wordpress.com/support/dashboard/
With that said, we do recommend the new editor though, and we have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
We also have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Thanks.
I only see the blocks as things stopping me do what I could do before, so the upgrade is worse than useless for me.
Working with WordPress is now taking way too much of my time. I just spent 30 minutes recreating my site elsewhere without reading anything or asking for support on forums, so the move elsewhere is my chosen solution
On that basis, I have updated this to resolved.

Hi. Same here. Would you mind sharing the platform that you’ve recreated your site at?

@thebyzantineguy @musicdoc1 – I think you need to leave the comma off.

I moved it to Wix.
Wix has an option to migrate direct from WordPress but I like to be sure everything has worked so I did it manually.I downloaded the media from my wordpress site, then copied and pasted the text from the wordpress pages/posts to corresponding pages I created in Wix, and then uploaded the media to wix and linked the media back in the images before publishing.
It was simple, intuitive and I didn’t have to read a single document.
It took me about half an hour, following which I spent about three and a half hours doing housekeeping on the new site. Was like a breath of fresh air. Really pleased with the outcome.
A hint: Your Wix site, will start with the text from your email address, so it is a good idea to register with an email address starting with the your desired site name.

Thanks. I may give Wix a try, but I’d hope there’s an import option for posts and pages, because I’ve got too many to move by copy and paste, and thousands of images precisely arranged in them too.

I downloaded the media from my wordpress site
How? Do you mean export and import? Thanks again : )
-
Yes, Export Content.
This will download the selected content from your site in a compressed file. Mine came down with a file structure showing when the media was uploaded/created, which was pretty helpful.
I then just had to sort it to see what I actually wanted to keep. -

Thanks! : -) You might be right, but I’ve never heard that before. The only ways I know of being notified of new comments in a thread are 1. to subscribe to it, and 2. check the box at the bottom of the thread labeled “Notify me of follow-up replies via email.”
