I want to install a yelp badge with a review counter onto my homepage sidebar

I tried clicking a text widget, but all the code appeared when I went to view it, not the badge with the counter of reviews

Is Yelp offers a HTML-only Review Badge, you’d be able to include that within a Text widget. Alternatively, you can copy the Yelp image and create your own image link by following this guide:
