I am trying to set up a blog for neighbors and don’t want it to appear to the general public. I want neighbors to subscribe to the blog when I invite them. I suspect that I will want to change passwords from time to time for security. PLEASE HELP For that matter, is there a WordPress for Dummies book? I also want to learn how to have the ‘About’ page appear without using the /about/ tag after the X.wordpress.com URL

Your visitors will need to have their own WordPress.COM account – but they don’t need a blog
Since it is by user they have their own passwords and you don’t need to worry about that part – yes someone could pass their ID around

While I am mooching free advice, can objectionable posts be removed by the administrator? Can any reader who has been invited remove a post as well? Thanks again. Fred (a.k.a. ipedal311)

There is a difference between someone that can view a Private Blog and someone that can write anything more than a comment
WordPress.COM sets a cookie when you are logged in – it remembers that you should have access to that blog – log out and try again
Can any reader who has been invited remove a post as well?
No – see above – a Viewer can’t do anything but read the blog and leave comments (if you have comments enabled)

Thanks a ton. My head is spinning. I did order the book on Amazon between posts to you. I am also reading the links you had posted. I really appreciate your help. I am trying to do a blog for my home owners association and want it to be private for residents here. I think this is the way to go.

My question exactly. I finally got my WordPress for Dummies book today and it seems to have instructions for making a blog POST password secure but I want to have a password requirement for entering the entire blog at all. This is for members of our HOA only so I don’t want anyone to even get beyond the front gate guard. Can this be done?

I set it that way and then I clicked to refresh the screen to get onto the home page and it showed right up without requesting a password. I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong.

You can password protect individual posts:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/But, IMO, for your purpose, that would be unwise. For one thing, you’d have to tell each and everyone the passwords (unless you used the same password for each post…). For another: Anyone could share / leave written notes / forget passwords to the posts.

I want to password protect the whole blog. Each member/resident will be given the password to see the blog in the neighborhood paper newsletter or via email. The idea is that JQ Public won’t be able to see anything other than a login page if they type in the XXXHOA.wordpress.com URL. Security will exist by sending by email a new password every month so that people who move away will no longer have access to the blog.

Log out of the account with the blog you want to be private.
Note: an account can have many blogs in it. Is that your case: one email you used to set up all three? Or did you use different email addresses to set up each of your accounts?

UGH. I used one email address to set up all three. Worse yet, I can’t figure out how to log out. Also, I have what I think is a second page that I’d like to have in the header. I suspect there is a way to cut the second page after copying it and then paste it onto the header but in a different font. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help. I am under the gun to get this thing on line and active.

If all else fails you can log out at the top of this page on the right side
Nothing wrong with having all three blogs in the same account – once they are set up and running you can transfer them to another account if you want – takes less than 3 minutes
