I want to map a domain and then switch registrars to use wordpress instead
-
I am using Go Daddy to host my domain. I am thinking of switching over to a wordpress.com platform. I was going through the faqs, however, I’m not quite sure I have similar problems. I want to be able to upgrade to a premium wordpress plan, map my previous domain to the wordpress one and cancel my account from Go Daddy. I want to be able to have the least down time as possible. I thought of canceling the Go Daddy account, and waiting for them to release the domain so I can use wordpress to buy it. I also thought about domain transferring. Not quite sure how to go about doing this in the most efficient way. Thanks!

HI there,
I want to be able to upgrade to a premium wordpress plan, map my previous domain to the wordpress one and cancel my account from Go Daddy.
If you map your domain here you can cancel your hosting account with GoDaddy, but not your domain. It’s not possible to transfer a domain to WordPress.com, so you’ll need to change the name servers with GoDaddy to point the domain here, but leave the domain registered with GoDaddy and buy the mapping upgrade here.
Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)I thought of canceling the Go Daddy account, and waiting for them to release the domain so I can use wordpress to buy it.
After cancelling a domain it can be as long as three months before the registrar releases the domain so you can register it again, and that’s if they don’t sell it privately at auction, so I strongly recommend against cancelling a domain you still want to use. If you cancel it you stop being the owner and anyone else will be able to use it again, so you run a definite risk of losing it.
