I’m trying to register/upgrade my blog here as thenewrepublican.com. But i’m getting this message “Someone (maybe you?) already registered thenewrepublican.com, but the domain is not pointing to WordPress.com.”
Maybe someone is cybersquating on my blog’s name?? I’ve had this blog for years. Help!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

thenewrepublican.com appears to be owned by a domain reseller.
In this case, you’ll need to purchase it from them and later map it following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Yes, someone owns it and it is for sale. Don’t expect a bargain price though. The last three I have checked into for clients have ranged from $1500 to $10,000.
Go to the URL and contact them to get a quote, but don’t be surprised if the cost is seriously prohibitive. I’ve yet to see any of these sorts of things under $500.

Forgive me for being late to reply, but what protection do we at wordpress have against someone just taking our blog’s name and registering it as their own?
I did’nt register my blog’s name because I thought it was safe from that sort of thing as it was already in use here for a long time.
Since i do not want to buy the domain for that ridiculous price, what are my options? -
Your blog URL here is a subdomain of wordpress.COM, so when you get a blog here, you actually don’t “own” that subdomain name. It belongs to wordpress in reality, but they give you exclusive use of it while you are here.
subdomains cannot be registered so there is no protection. Only top level domain names can be registered. This is one of the reasons people in the know, such as raincoaster and timethief recommend to get your domain name sooner rather than later.
That domain name was first registered on Feb 22, 2007 and you have had “thenewrepublican.wordpress.com” as a site here, according to the date on your profile, for about 3 years, so it appears that whoever registered that domain name did it before you started the blog, so in actuality, they have “dibs” on it.

Remember, titles can’t be copyrighted. If you have an international trademark you can take action against people who register a blog of the same name (if you want a reputation as a pushy, heartless corporation) but we’ve even had people complaining that someone had registered a blog using “their” name and their name was Jim Smith.
