I want to remove a web site and preserve the one I worked in.

In my domain, domainname.com, I have ended up with two web sites. The first is ‘Added Domain Name’. This shows up in domainname.com. I have done no work in this area. The second, where I have done all of the customizing, is ‘Domain Name’ and it shows up under domainname.com/WKwordpress. Can I move ‘Domain Name’ down to the domainname.com level and get rid of the ‘Added Domain Name’?

  • You can get more precise help if you can share the domain names in question.

Are the domains in question hosted with WordPress.com? This support forum assists sites hosted with WordPress.com only.

If you are using self-hosted WordPress from https://wordpress.org, you can get some help in the support forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Self-hosted WordPress.org and WordPress.com are different entities and it can be confusing. More information about the differences can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    I have wordpress.com and hostgator.
I have a theme and several add-ons and widgets in domainname.com/WKwordpress. Can the entire environment be moved?
Why do you need the actual names?

Thanks for pointing this out. Actually, I discovered that the first instance above is in wordpress.org and the second is in wordpress.com. They are both attached to my domain name. I have the free version of wordpress.com, and I read that I must have the /WKwordpress in my URL. I would like to upgrade so that I can have a URL with just the domain name.
Is it safe to purge the page under wp.org? Then, can I upgrade and move all of the work I have done in the WKwordpress area up to the domainname.com?

Not being able to see this in working put me in no better position to advise you on this.

I will tag this thread for the attention of the support staff. Please wait while someone from the support staff gets back to you on this.

  • Hi there,

Please provide actual domain names, as that allows us to check the domains and the sites involved and give you accurate answers. If you only provide hypothetical domains, the best we can do is give you hypothetical answers.

There is only one site in your account, http://wanderingknowmad.com/WKwordpress. That is a self-hosted site, connected here via the Jetpack plugin. That site is hosted by Hostgator, so for any help in changing the domain you need to contact them. For help in moving content from one self-hosted site to another, you need to post in the self-hosted forums that @akumarjain linked to above.

There are no WordPress.com sites at all in your account, so there is nothing we can do from this end to help you.

If I just put in http://www.wanderingknowmad.com I am taken to Adventurous Wandering Knowmad – Just Another WordPress Site. That appears to be in HostGator, so I’ll work with them. My domain name is Wanderingknowmad.com
When I go to wordpress.com, I can tag on My Site in the header and get https://wordpress.com/stats/day/wanderingknowmad.com::WKwordpress. It shows all of the work I have been doing. Is this a self-hosted site in wordpress.com? Can I do an upgrade and move my site so that the URL no longer shows WKwordpress? Or, is this also a HostGator issue?

  • You can access your site in WordPress.com because it is connected here by the Jetpack plugin, but we have no control over your site itself or over your domain.

I see you have different sites at the root domain and at the subdirectory, but neither of those sites are on our servers, so we’re not able to help you with either. You’ll need HostGator’s help getting the root domain connected to the correct site.

Once you’ve done that, you can fix the URL that appears here in the WordPress.com dashboard by disconnecting and reconnecting Jetpack, though I recommend you contact Jetpack support for help with that when that point comes, so you don’t lose any existing stats/followers.
