I want to start a free blog

  When trying to set up a blog, the steps are forcing me to choose a domain and choose a plan.
  I thought wordpress for free and I will be able to start a blog *.worpress.com where you will be hosting it?

  Did you “start with free” https://wordpress.com/pricing/
  Just add a word or phrase rather than a full domain and you’ll be offered a free address (below the two paid for ones) ending in .blog or .wordpress.com. You can then fine tune the address before proceeding.
