Hi, I would like to upload a theme to my blog. I bought a domain name today with wordpress.com.
As far as I understand now, I cannot do this. I have no problems with my domain name, just the fact I have to use a default theme from wordpress.com’s library.
What are my solutions? So far all I can think of is canceling my domain with wordpress.com, re-purchasing the same name elsewhere and then using the software from wordpress.org. Seems like a lot of hassle, especially as I may have to wait a while for the name to be re-released for purchase.
Do I have any other options? Thanks for the help :D

You cannot apply an external theme to a WordPress.com blog.
If you cannot edit CSS well enough to design a blog you like here, and you cannot pick one of the 110 or so themes here, you will have to find hosting elsewhere, install WordPress.org software in it, and deal with it there.
Not a good idea to cancel a purchased domain; someone could snap it up from you. You’ve got it purchased though WP.com, you could just use them as the registrar and point the URL to the new blog you’ve got set up elsewhere. There is a US law against moving a domain for the first 60 days you’ve got it, though.

Thank you for the reply. I can’t use CSS and I don’t like a single one of the pre-set themes on here. So I am going to cancel my domain and get hosting elsewhere, and then use wordpress.org to run the site.
I’d rather not be paying for a domain that just redirects people to another site, although thanks for offering the suggestion.
I read on the forums that I can request a refund through my dashboard, where exactly do I go on my dashboard because I can’t find the right place. I also see people just requesting domain cancelation in the support forums and being responded to, so I will just do it there otherwise.
I didn’t know about this law. Will it affect me even though I am not a US citizen nor living in the US? And does canceling my domain and then re-registering it count as “moving”? I used the wordpress.com proxy upgrade to register the domain, maybe that will change things.

Thanks for the reply ellrywych. I just had a quick look at cPanel hosting, but it all looks too complicated for me. (I don’t know much about this really!) I think I am just going to register with ‘Bluehost’ as it seems fairly simple.

Yes the law will affect you even though you’re not a US citizen because a lot of hosting companies are in the US including WordPress.com.
You CAN”T request a refund on your dashboard right now, because staff are all on vacation till the 3rd. If you look in the forum you will see dozens upon dozens of threads from people who have issues with domains they want to cancel. I’ll flag this thread for staff attention and then you’re in their hands.

You’re welcome to keep your domain with us and update the nameservers to point to your hosting provider by following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers
After 60 days from the date of purchase, renewal, or nameserver change, you may also transfer your domain to another registrar: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar
We can also cancel your domain for you, but it won’t be available for purchase again for about a month, at which time it will be back on the open market.
