I want to use my website with my own domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I created a website with WordPress that i would like to use. I also purchased a domain, as i wanted the website to have extra features etc, and its own name. But when i exported my wordpress wesbsite http://www.janne7148.wordpress.com to my http://www.evolvetohappiness.com all the settings have changed and it is a different version and i do not like it. How can i simply use my jane7148.wordpress.com on evolvetohappiness.com without having to pay any more money and keeping it exactly as it is on jane7148.wordpress.com?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

jane7148.wordpress.com on evolvetohappiness.com without having to pay any more money and keeping it exactly as it is on jane7148.wordpress.com

You want domain mapping $13.-/yr – that will keep you hosted here on WordPress.COM

evolvetohappiness.com – is a WordPress.ORG install on a different host – with domain mapping you would not need the other host

Thank you for your response auxclass!
Now that i have already paid for my WordPress.ORG install, is there any other way of having my original site on Worpress.ORG without purchasing domain mapping?
Or if i did purchase Domain mapping, wouldn’t i just have the same problem, that the website ‘evolvetohappiness.com’ would be different from my original wordress website?

Domain mapping turns jane7148.wordpress.com into evolvetohappiness.com (same exact site – but the address is just changed for your visitors ) – you are still hosted here

If you want to change the looks of the current WordPress.ORG install at evolvetohappiness.com – you would need to ask for help in the WordPress.ORG help forum since we don’t help with WordPress.ORG installs –

If you keep your WordPress.ORG install and you have not had the custom domain name long you should probably buy the domain forward I think it is to send traffic from here to your new site – and also set the site here to Private to avoid duplicate content on the internet (and also to prevent having a mirror site which is against the Terms of Service here

The two different systems are different beasts so to speak

Thank you again, i would like to go ahead and turn jane7148 into evolvetohappiness.com
However, i do not know how to do this. Should i delete my current evolvetohappiness page?

Also, will i be able to have my own site icon when my site is hosted here? Without paying for this feature?

    @jannepsych:

I’d recommend contacting the host that you’re currently using evolvetohappiness.com with, and ask them to cancel and/or refund your service, since it sounds like you want to continue using WordPress.com. Just make sure they don’t cancel your domain name.

You can map your domain name, evolvetohappiness.com, to your current WordPress.com site by following the steps in your dashboard here:

    https://janne7148.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Thank you Chris, i have completed all of these steps, including paying for the domain mapping, but now when i search the internet for evolvetohappiness.com it does not take me to my wordpress.com site, it still takes me to the wordpress.org site? Why is this?
What i want is to use my evolvetohappiness.com domain for my jane7148.wordpress.com website.

it looks like the name servers have not been changed at the Registrar

    Hold Your Horses!

It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at evolvetohappiness.com, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cache, and try again.
    Non-WordPress.com Nameservers

Although evolvetohappiness.com has been registered, it is not using WordPress.com nameservers. If your domain is mapped to a self-hosted site, then your configuration may be fine as currently set up. If you wish to host your site at WordPress.com, you will need to update your nameservers as outlined below.

To learn about how to correctly map an existing domain, please see our documentation. If you’re not sure whether you own this domain or not, the WHOIS database record may help you out.

See below for the name server instructions

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Note: if you just changed then in the last few minutes the changes might not have started to migrate

    Thank you again auxclass!
Can you tell me something else, on my worldpress.com account i now have two domains listed: jane7148.wordpress.com and evolvetohappiness.com.
Which one of these should i have selected as my PRIMARY DOMAIN?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, do i need to make any changes to ‘Edit Site Address’ in the jane7148wordpress.com domain settings?

  • Unknown's avatar

evolvetohappiness.com = primary – that is the one you want visitor to see

Note: you will always work in the base plain blog in your dashboard ( jane7148.wordpress.com )

  • Unknown's avatar

Don’t edit the Site Address – I think that is a WordPress.ORG install setting and it can crash a lot of stuff on the site you are moving from

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you i have now reverted back to this initial change, and evolvetohappiness.com is my primary domain.

Do i need to ‘Edit Site Address’ in the jane7148wordpress.com domain settings?

  • Unknown's avatar

THANK YOU!!!! Just got that :)

  • Unknown's avatar

One other thing, you mentioned earlier that i need to –
set the site here (the evolvetohappiness.com wordpress.org site) to Private to avoid duplicate content on the internet (and also to prevent having a mirror site which is against the Terms of Service here.
Do you know how i can do this?

  • Unknown's avatar

Do i need to ‘Edit Site Address’ in the jane7148wordpress.com domain settings

had to go look at my site and found the edit domain setting here also – again – no do not edit that unless you need to do something like add custom email with your domain name and you are using a third party email service

  • Unknown's avatar

Since you are moving back to WordPress.COM from your WordPress.ORG site – as soon as the name servers are changed to WordPress.COM – your old site will go away and vanish – – so there will be no duplicate content to worry about since you should only have one web site and it will be here – – so on need to set to private or worry about duplicate content

  • Unknown's avatar

Great thank you, that would be ideal. Hopefully i just need to wait for the changes to take place. The entire process has been followed, so it should work!

  • Unknown's avatar

I just checked and domain helper still shows your name servers as not set correctly

See below for the name server instructions

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

  • Unknown's avatar

I have followed all those steps so i do not understand why it is not working.
Is the problem with the DNS settings?
