I want to use Premium with my own DNS

Hi, I can’t change the DNS to wordpress, as I need to be able to control the DNS records for MX and other subdomains. I want to use A records instead. What should I put? Right now, the wordpress subdomain CNAMEs to lb.wordpress.com, should I use the IPs for this?
Another question is: What happens to the SSL cert? Right now SSL is enabled on the old host and if people reload the site, they will get an SSL error, if I change the DNS (testet with setting in local hosts file). How can you avoid that?

  • Hi there,

You can add all the MX records and CNAMEs you need in the DNS manager on our end if you point the name servers to us:

    Manage Your DNS Records

That would be the most reliable option, and what we recommend.

Else, you will need to add two A-records with these IPs:

    192.0.78.24

    192.0.78.25

as well as a CNAME to point the www subdomain to the free WordPress.com address of your site.

We automatically issue SSL certificates for all sites hosted with us, and that will happen as soon as you add the mapping upgrade on our end and our system can detect that the A records or name servers are pointed to us.

    Hi!

I have the same problem, so hope elijah doesn’t mind me jumping on the thread, rather than starting another…

I think I’ve managed to get my subdomain working (blog.chris-kendall.com). Aside from the small issue of the security certificate.

I’ve achieved this by adding the A records you suggested. I no longer have the error message in my WordPress about having to configure my DNS – is it just a waiting game for the SSL to be allocated?

I didn’t quite follow your point about the CNAME… I did try to add a CNAME for http://www.blog but this stopped everything working. Also, it will not let me add a CNAME for ‘blog’ by itself – it creates an error message. I had been told by the support I got from GoDaddy – to get to this stage – that there is no need to add a CNAME and A records… I am just wanting to get the security sorted out though.

I hope you can help. Thanks

  • @thechriskendall, I’ve provisioned your site with the SSL so everything should be working correctly now :)
