    Hi everybody,
I’m Lourdes from Netherlands. I’m in the language lessons business.
I hope someone can help me out here, please. I have been blogging for at least two years now. Recently i noticed i can’t use plugins. I’d really love to take part in affiliate programs and explore more possibilities with my blog. I’d also love to add a website to it. Something where i can put more like business info etc. How can a i change my http://www.”name”.com wordpress blog to a blog or website where i can use plugins? Can i add a website to my blog?
    Many thanks in advance.
    With kind regards,
    Lourdes.

I have been on WP.COM for several years and I think you have to have a WP.ORG blog to be able to use plugins.

I see you know how to use widgets. So use the about widget or create a new blog for your business by clicking on My Sites, Switch site, add new WordPress.

  • Hi there. To use plugins you’ll need to set up a self-hosted WordPress.org site (i.e. leave WordPress.com). You’ll first need to buy a hosting account from a web hosting company like Bluehost (just one example; not an endorsement ;-) ) and then download and install the WordPress.org software to it. Then you move your content and followers there and map the domain to the new host. See here for more information: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
    http://wordpress.org/hosting/

Or you can just set up a self-hosted site and link to it from your WordPress.com site, i.e. have two different sites, as @gobetweenflames suggested.

Keep in mind you are allowed to sell your own products or services via your blog, either through a contact form-PayPal button combination, or via the Business upgrade that will allow you to add a shopping cart to your site through Ecwid or Shopify:

WordPress.com also allows you to post affiliate links from reputable sellers, as long as the main point of your blog is not to drive traffic to affiliate sites and you don’t use image and banner links to affiliate programs: https://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/

Thanks a lot for your help! I really appreciate it. I have one more question. i am allowed to post affiliate links? Then why every time i try to post the link (it will look like a banner) i only get a lot of text with theze things < > (i think is the HTML code ) and it does not look like a nice picture or banner? I’m sorry, and i apologyze if maybe i am making very stupid questions, but i really do not know much about these things. (i’m a bit technically challenged :-) ) Everything i know from PC internet etc i have teached myself with doing and trial and mistake.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Lourdes.

Again, you’re not allowed to post banner or image links to affiliate sites. You’re only allowed to post plain text links. Posting banner links will get your site suspended.

The reason the image doesn’t appear is probably because the embed code contains an iframe code or another type of code not allowed on WordPress.com. See if the affiliate site has an option for a plain text link, and use that.

Another reason could be that you’re posting to the wrong editor. You’ll need to post it in the text/html editor, not the visual one.
