I want to use wordpress to build a new site while my old site remains active

We have an existing active site with GoDaddy. Their support recommended we use WordPress to build a new site (quite unhappy with their Website Builder). We will want the new site to replace the old site using the same domain. How do we get started building a new WordPress site (ready to go Premium) while leaving our existing GoDaddy site unaffected? The Get Started steps want to map the domain, won’t that screw up our existing site?

Yes that will mess you up real bad – just pick a good name you like (yourgoodname.wordpress.com) –

Turn off the search engines to keep from confusing things, or set the site to private and keep everyone out (Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading – pick your option)

Build site etc – then use domain mapping to move the name to your site here – turn on the search engine access and make a few new POSTS (they call up search engines and ask them to stop by, Pages don’t call) – you might want to wait 72 hours for the new Posts to let the name change work across the internet

might be a bit of search traffic drop for a short time while search engines get used to the new site –
