  I want people to be able to sign up for an account on my website. and I want users to be able to follow without being sent invitations manually.

  I’m not sure about creating user accounts, but you should be able to add a widget to allow people to follow your blog. Here are some instructions to set that up: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
