I was told to contact support when an import failed?
-
I have been importing items from a wordpress.org blog back into wordpress.com (the free site). It was working fine until one import errored and I was told to contact support, but there isn’t any support.
I cannot just redo it, as when I select ‘import’ now, it says ‘Importing, contact us within 24 hrs if you don’t hear from us and we’ll fix it.’ Well, I got the email five minutes after I tried to import the file that it didn’t work and it said to contact someone and I am getting frustrated with this.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Kelly,
I have reset the importer for you. Please try the import again. I noticed you are importing multiple files, if you’re having trouble with one particular file let us know and we can take a closer look at that file.

For some reason my blog, although is mostly just text, has huge file sizes. There is a single post I can’t even export because it is over the 15 mb limit to import and it is text only. I have no idea why. This means I had to export multiple files and upload them one by one so what should take about 5 minutes of my time, took over 2 hours, just to find out how to batch 2 years of posts into under 15 MB blocks.
So unless you can raise the maximum cap, I don’t think I can import that one post.

Hi Kelly,
I have reset the importer again. I also took a look at the September 2011import that keeps failing. It appears that the import contains many posts with the “404 file not found status”. Posts with that status will not be imported. Can you check the file for actual post content?
I also noticed this file is about 12MB in size. Would it be possible to break the import into smaller files and try the import again?

@bdukes – I went through the posts and found one with an image missing and fixed it, exported it again… and same instant fail. I think it is only 4 posts but I will split them up individually so I can find the post with the bad file.
Oh yeah, and it errored out again and needs to be reset.
Do you have any tips for how to export a post that is over the 15 MB size? It has no images, fewer comments than a lot of posts… I have no idea why it is so big.

15MB for one post? That’s insane! How long (many words) is the post? A 15 MB post is equivalent to a 3700 page book.
If you have any plugins in your self-hosted WordPress site maybe try to disable them. Also you may want to delete spam comments (if you haven’t already) .
To give you some background on how images work in the importer. They are pulled from the source (often the site that generated the export) the import files contain no images.
I have reset the importer again. If it doesn’t work this time can you email the files which failed to us at [email protected] and we’ll take a look at the source files and see if anything is amiss.

The post is actually 19ish MB I’m referring to above and it is less than 3500 WORDS, much less 3500 pages. I disabled most of plugins (I didn’t want to lose the comments when exporting) and have no idea why this particular post is so bloated, or why the entire blog is given if you added all of the posts together, they wouldn’t be 3500 pages worth of stuff. I deleted all of the spam and I swore, the file got bigger. Can I send you the large exported post so you can figure out why one small post is so large?
About ready to have another go with the file that keeps hanging, or maybe I’ll do all of my other files and save that for last…

@bdukes – I found the bad file. It used to have a link up included in it which might be why it was erroring. Should I send it to you? I thought I updated it without any links but exported it and it still errored.
Also wondering what to do about the one post that is too big to import for no explicable reason…
And the import needs to be reset again, as that bad file triggered an error again…
The good news is I have everything imported but two posts… I think.

Woot! Progress!

If you would send us (or upload to a file sharing service and email us the link) we’ll take a look and see if anything stands out.

I reset the importer if you do want to try again :)
