    Hi

WordPress.org provide a free open-source software that you can use to install on your own servers. Although it is powerful, you’ll need some knowledge. You can transfer a WordPress.com hosted blog content to a .ORG, yes.

You can read the extensive support page on blog transferring to .org here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/

You can check the differences between COM and ORG here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    hope that helps.

ut was told that your other site of wordpress.org was better

Actually, both are really good! Which one you choose will depend on your site’s goals and needs.

Hosting is another term that needs to be explained as It is foreign to me.

Every website needs to be stored somewhere. Hosting is the service that companies provide when they store and (in some cases) help you manage your website by providing support.

At WordPress.com, there are no hosting fees but we charge for other upgrades such as a custom domain or extra space or customization features. This lets us provide a free version of WordPress to many people while still covering costs when some people pay for upgrades.

Other hosting companies will charge a flat monthly or yearly fee which allows you space to setup a website. At a host like that, you may install the free, open source WordPress software but you are on your own to setup and manage and maintain it. Support for a setup like that is done by volunteers at http://wordpress.org/support/ whereas support for WordPress.com is done here and via live chat if you have purchased any upgrades.

Apparently there are plug ins & other things that go with the .org site so can you advise an oldie with a slow brain!

At WordPress.com, you may not install custom plugins and you are limited to the plugins and themes that WordPress.com selects. If your site doesn’t need any specialized plugins, then WordPress.com would be a good choice for you. If your site will require a lot of customization and you would like to learn to maintain the software yourself and work with volunteers when you need support, then a self-hosted WordPress.org plugin would work best. Both are great choices, which one you pick will depend on what you need your site to do.

@pedger, it can be tricky to explain hosting to a brand new website owner :) your links were really good too!
