I was trying to install a mail chimp popup.
I had heard that I was meant to paste the mail chimp code into the footer php file.
When doing so I got the following message:
Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.
Then, my website broke in a manner of speaking. The images disappeared leaving gaps behind, the background image changed place and I could no longer edit the home page with elementor.
Furthermore, the footer php file is now empty. I don’t know a lot about this but I’d imagine the absence of code in the footer file is what has led to the broken website.
When I switch themes to to twenty fifteen or twenty seventeen, the website seems to work (obviously the layout isn’t setup right, but the images are there and I can edit with elementor). And these themes have code in their footer php files.
So, I’ve located the default original footer php code for Ocean wp, the theme I had been using, but when I try to paste it in, it gives the same error:
Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.
Where do I go from here, I don’t know what SFTP is but is this something I need to delve into or is there an easier more obvious fix?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
It appears that your website uses the self-hosted version of WordPress (hosted by SoftLayer) rather than WordPress.com, which is what this forum is designed to help with. Note the difference here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
You may be able to find help here: https://wordpress.org/support/
Hope this gets fixed soon!
