  I wish to add a Checkout plugin… Do I need hosting?

  You cannot upload/add custom plugins on the sites hosted on WordPress.COM. We can only use the plugins that come built-in to all WordPress.COM sites.

  Also, we cannot have an eCommerce system here(If you are trying to implement that on WordPress.COM), because on WordPress.COM we do not have FTP access to upload products and other information, we do not have a shopping cart inbuilt plugin here and the last but not the least, WordPress.COM does not have a Secure Payment system.

  The goal of WordPress.COM is to keep things simple. So that the technical stuffs are handled by WordPress and we focus on creating quality content.

  If you wish to have greater control over your site, you can use WordPress.ORG-a self hosted platform/software to create blogs, websites and more, with greater customization possibilities.
