I wish to edit my email forwarding addresses
-
wishing to edit my forwarding email addresses (I have 3 set up) I found my dashboard (store/my domains/edit domain/email) now tells me I have custom mail servers defined and forwarding is not available. I did not set up custom servers and at least one of my forwards is still working. Help please.
p.s. This form is not allowing me to select my custom saxonized.com url, only the free one with the word ‘wordpress’ in it.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Mark,
Currently, it does look like you have custom email DNS records (through Google Apps) on your domain saxonized.com. You can see those records from your Domains page here by clicking “Edit Domain” and then “Edit DNS”:
https://saxonized.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
I’m happy to remove those for you so you can setup your email forwarding again. However, please note, if we delete those records, any third-party mail services you have setup will stop working. Would you like me to do that for you?

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for getting back to me. Presumably then, it was the use of the Google app that put those custom settings in place? My question now would be, if removed, would I be able to recreate the existing forwards, or would those addresses be ‘lost’ because Google would believe them to be already in use?

Hey Mark,
You should be able to setup email forwarding again for your custom domain. I just want to be sure that you don’t actually have a custom email address setup through a third-party like Google Apps. Do you have a separate inbox for your custom addresses ((email visible only to moderators and staff))? If so, that would indicate you actually have setup a separate email address. If you were just using email forwarding, your emails to (email visible only to moderators and staff) would just be diverted to your normal email inbox.
Just reply back to confirm, and I will remove your email records so we can setup your forwarding again!

Hi Jeremy.
This is all a little confusing. When I set-up my custom domain I created 3 forwarded emails through my WordPress dashboard ((email visible only to moderators and staff) plus 2 others for members of the band the blog represents). Although they were set-up through my WP dash, all 3 are working as standard gmail email accounts with all 3 of us accessing our own accounts seperately. Just 6 weeks or so ago, using my WP dash I checked on the 3 to confirm the spelling on one of them for a band member: I changed nothing. Yesterday I went bank into the dash to create a 4th and I encountered the problem that prompted my original call for help: No record of the 3 just custom settings. Weird that after all this time (nearly 3 years) these custom settings should now appear. From your description it is clear that I have separate addresses rather than just forwards but as I say, I created them through the WP dash, not a Google app. In order to preserve the 3 I am guessing I will have to forego the other 2 empty slots.

And it really does not help that this forum will not let us print email addresses but rather replaces them with ‘[email redacted]’. Not sure what you were trying to print but I tried to write mark @ saxonized.com (which does indeed come into my usual gmail inbox while the other 2 do not).

Hey Mark,
I apologize for using the email address format earlier. The forum does redact email addresses. However, the email addresses are available to staff members. In my earlier response, I was just using “address at saxonized.com” as an example.
Let’s rewind a bit and see if we can figure out what may have happened. It looks like you originally registered the domain on 10/26/11. The custom DNS records were added on that date as well. You can see the timestamp on these DNS records here:
https://saxonized.wordpress.com/wp-admin/revision.php?revision=2817&domain=saxonized.com
It doesn’t look like you have any more recent changes to your DNS records so it looks like those have been in place for quite some time. Additionally, when you have custom DNS records in place, you will not be able to setup email forwarding through WordPress.com (you can only use one or the other).
The main way to tell the difference between an email that is setup through Google Apps and one that is setup through WordPress.com forwarding is the email inbox. If you have a separate email inbox somewhere for “mark at saxonized.com”, that would indicate you have an email through Google Apps. Is it possible that you have a separate email inbox, but through Gmail, you’ve forwarded that inbox to your normal email inbox?

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for sticking with me on this.
I really am confused about how this got set up like this. Yes, I use gmail for my day to day email, but nothing else from them: No G+, and no other apps. I would not even know how to go about setting up a Gmail account with an @saxonized.com address: What I have now I definitely set-up via the WP dash. Have things changed perhaps over the last 3 years? Certainly 10 forwarded addresses were available back then (compared to 5 today), perhaps other email functions changed also? Anyway, it is all rather a moot point as what functionality is available today is what we must work with. Lets just go ahead and clear it all out, if you would please, and I will set up pure forwarding as soon as it is available again after the reset.
Thanks for all your time,
Best,
Mark. -
Hey Mark,
I went ahead and removed your custom DNS records. Can you try to setup email forwarding again following the instructions here?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/
Let me know if you have any trouble!

Just checked it now and I still have custom settings. I will give it a moment to think and try again a little later then let you know. Thanks again.

Sunday morning now, and still I only see the custom server settings. I don’t think it has worked Jeremy.
-
Hey Mark,
I apologize. It looks like the records didn’t clear properly for some reason. They’re clear now. You should be able to enter the email forwards.
Let me know if you are still experiencing trouble!
