I wish we had the ability to use Google Adsense!
-
That is not what WordPress is doing. Staff have said that they are not paid for the Possibly Related Posts; they said that flat-out.
What I do think is happening is that they are courting the big media sites with big media money and a desire to get into blogging.
-
i’m happy for word press to make money from ads.
my blogs are FREE.
their costs have to be enormous
if you want a completely ad free blog
then surely you will need to pay for it! -
@ raincoster, I don’t see why they should send my readers to Barrons for free, while large financial sites are paid by Barrons itself. Are we wimps or what?
Also at Barron’s site I couldn’t find one single link to WordPress or to any Blog on WordPress. What I could find at Barrons site is tons of Advertisers links and offers of paid subscribtion to Barrons itself. So I don’t see what WordPress could be expecting from Barrons except plain money for readers ad subscribers we are sending to Barrons.
Do you have a link to where they say that “they are not paid for the Possibly Related Posts”. I would like to go there and ask for explanation about my Barrons links.
-
Dude, you misunderstand: the fact that they use blogs to direct traffic to mainstream media sites is the single reason this is disabled on my blog. The MSM sites NEVER link back to the blogs via a “Possibly related posts” thing. This kind of favoritism is something I’ve beaten Matt over the head with via emails.
I don’t have a link to where they said it was unpaid, but you can use the search as well as I can. Google is probably a better bet, because the forum search is borked lately.
As for what WordPress could be expecting from Barrons except plain money for readers ad subscribers we are sending to Barrons. that’s easy. WordPress (and Automattic) are probably going for another round of funding. Thats’ why there are so many features coming down the pipes all at once. And buttering up multibillion-dollar media companies who are hungry to own cyberspace is smart from that perspective: all those billions have to go somewhere, and Google already owns Blogger. That makes WordPress very attractive.
That is entirely theoretical, though; I have no confirmation of that at all.

helene,
Most of the Internet is based on one single fact:
the money that you make from Ads is much much larger than cost of any online service.
There is far enough money in Ads to share between Blogger and Service provider and still make WordPress very rich.
If WordPress wants to be Ads free it is fine. If WordPress wants to sell Ads, then they should definitely find an honest way to share with Bloggers.
It is unacceptable that they don’t allow our Adsense just to sell their own Ads.
-
ooooooooooooh!
i c ‘ish!deminvest,
thanx for yr reply>..the money that you make from Ads is much much larger than cost of any online service. <
and
>There is far enough money in Ads to share between Blogger and Service provider and still make WordPress very rich.>numbers pls?
where do you get these facts from?
your sources?what ‘honest way” do you think needs to be used?
what really gets me in the blogging scene is that it seems that to get hits – presumably to make money – many sites are bogus or using others efforts to draw bloggers/surfers
often there is no name, no about, no country and often, to leave a message, you have to sign up to google!
this pisses me off!
being ethical is what i want
being transparent is what i want
especially for people like myself who haven’t worked out how/what blogging is all about!
are you prepared to be transparent about your earnings?
look forward to visiting your blog! -
The entire issue of the advertising is money, There has been some criticism of big business on peoples blogs.
What about allowing people to sell things from their blogs?
And not new mass produced items.
But anything else (that isn’t adult) I am thinking crafts, writings etc.
Wordpress could charge for this.
And the ethos of the income wouldn’t be top heavy. -
deminvest,
have looked at your site [homepage] to see what ads you’re talking about
i’m visually challenged!
might they be the “automated” links found when one clicks on the title of the post?
have you switched them off ? i think in design/extras?i took a look on my site for them
there are none to day
i wonder what happened!? -
morris, if you read the Business Blogs post in the FAQ, you’ll see that original artists, artisans, and authors are indeed allowed to sell their things on their blogs. It’s already done; I know many artists who sell their things on WP.com.
Helene, you’ll basically never see the ads unless your cache and cookies have been cleared and you’re logged out and coming to the site from a search engine. That’s who sees the ads.
-
helene,
thanks for your answer. I
f the cost of Service was higher than Ad revenues, no Internet media company could survive. Internet media companies spend for:
1) Staff
2) Offices and Office tools
3) Internet Service
Internet Media Companies only make money with Ads. The money they make with Ads is much larger than cost of “3) Internet Service” because it must also cover large “1)” and “2)” expenses and still give those companies a profit.I am very prepared to be “transparent” on my earnings. My Blog is about my investment earnings and losses and I’m 100% transparent on them.
I am complaining about the fact that WordPress is not at all transparent about how much advertising they put on our Blogs.
They say that when those links appear on our Blogs, we get some links on other Blogs, but they are not transparent about how many. Also they are not transparent about what they get in exchange for the traffic that thos links drive to large corporations like Microsoft and Barrons.
-
bloody hell!
you said i wouldn’t see the ads unless i’m
“…..coming to the site from a search engine. That’s who sees the ads.”raincoaster……..thanx for that
this is critical for one of my blogs and how it looks!
do the ads screw up the layout?
mind you i don’t think my blog showes up in searches! -
@ raincoster,
I find very difficult to believe that they send millions of dollars of free traffic to companies like Barrons or Microsoft which would be willing to pay, just to be nice to them.
-
@ helene,
I read trough your Blog, which is very nice and interesting.
Maybe they don’t put Ads on it because… well it is far from being “Business Friendly”, which is a main reason why I like it :-)
-
@ raincoster
This is the forum where Matt discusses about those links:
http://wordpress.com/blog/2008/04/25/possibly-an-announcement/
I couldn’t find a clear statement where he says that they are not paid by anyone.I posted a coment which is waiting for moderation. I hope we well get a clear answer on that:

Your comment is awaiting moderation.
Matt, I’ll ask it plainly:
Do WordPress or Automattic receive Money or any kind of valuables from companies like MSN (Microsoft) or Barrons for sending them our reader?
If you don’t, I really think you should get some: they do pay about everybody else millions of dollars to get traffic, why should we be the only wimps to send it for free?” -
Thank you
I searched the FAQ for business posts. Nothing was returned.
I can sell the following on another blog I have.
Hand painted tarot cards with original descriptions. (I did the descriptions with a partner who did the artwork)
Personal Palm and Tarot readings.
Do you think this would be allowed?
I once asked support but received no reply. -
Dude, you’ve got it wrong: I’m NOT on their side in this. I passionately loathe the fact that they link to MSM sites that don’t link back.
If you want to argue with someone, why don’t you argue with Matt?
-
how come i can’t see your contentious ads?
do tell what makes a site “business friendly”?!
ok must be yours!
is it the content that isn’t business orientated?
I’ve recently had business cards printed with all my blogs on it!
bizlinks is misleading now
it was aimed at my linkedin networkwhat have wordpress [wp] said to you?
i take it you have contacted them!
i like them – they seem like a bunch of delightful super geeks!
judging by the beach pic
http://wordpress.com/about/WP is privately owned isn’t it?
matt is the owner?
they aren’t on the stock exchange are they?my fear is that they are tweaking WP till they have ironed out all the glitches and then they’ll sell out to corporate America or the highest bidder!
-
Morris: “business blogs.” There’s an FAQ post about it, although the search as i said is borked and you might not find it.
I announce my blog classes, there are people selling paintings and crafts and clothes. You have to ask support. My guess is that would be totally fine, but it’s just a guess.

rain,
my intention wasn’t to argue with you, but to try with your help to better understand what is happening. I do understand that you also dislike those ads. We only have a slightly different point of view:
I believe that Automattic probably get money from those ads, you seem to think that probably they get advantages that may anyway turn into money some day….
