I would like help to delete the URL
-
I decided to alter the name of my blog to the URL that matched the title i.e Roundabouts and Rainbows. However I chose not to delete the original URL (sweettintedglasses.wordpress.com) as this is the same as my Blogger. By changing the setting of the main blog to public today, I decided to use a popular search engine to find it. However by not permanently deleting the original URL, the new URL didn’t even appear. I would really benefit from having just one URL as it is very confusing for me.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are several reasons why your new URL doesn’t come up when you search for it:
- Search engines take time to find you. Your new URL must be crawled by search engine scripts before you will rise in rankings—even if all the content on your site is exactly the same. The process can take days.
- If you don’t delete your old URL, there is a chance that certain search engines will detect that your new URL is simply a duplicate. This could change your rankings, as well.
- If you use a permanent redirect from your old URL to the new one, search engines will begin routing traffic for you.
Did you follow these instructions when changing your blog’s address?

Thank you for your help. I completely understand that I wouldn’t be at the top of the search engine, but it appears that if I had permanently deleted the original URL then I wouldn’t have had this problem. The cost of permanently redirecting a URL appears to be an annual payment, which doesn’t seem right even that my blog was only made public after I made this change. I take on board your comments and read through the instructions, which I appeared to have followed.

It’s quite possible that I have misunderstood what you are trying to achieve.
The title of your post pertains to deleting your url. When you log into your dashboard, do you now have two separate blogs—one listed as sweettinted glasses (the empty or old one), and one listed as roundaboutsandrainbows?
-
No problem. Yes that is correct – the empty one appears on search engines even though I have made it ‘hidden’ in my settings. I can understand why you are confused as I know people change their blog URL address a lot!

@heatherad3
This site http://sweettintedglasses.wordpress.com/ is not “hidden”. Hiding blogs on your dashboard does not remove their visibility from search engines and the internet.To change blog visibility to Private go to Dashboard > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 .

Thank you for the tip @timethief! However as @smdaymeansnever has stated:
“If you don’t delete your old URL, there is a chance that certain search engines will detect that your new URL is simply a duplicate. This could change your rankings, as well.”
I am still in a bit of a pickle and wish to full delete the old URL. However I am worried that this will not allow for my new URL to be found (no permanent redirect).

@heatherad3
Hi there,
I see that you have made the visibility of http://sweettintedglasses.wordpress.com/ private now. Best wishes for successful blogging. -
Heather,
I’d like to add that your new site will be found eventually. I once made the mistake of changing hosting and letting go of a domain before using the permanent redirect (which, of course, was at no additional charge since I was already paying for the hosting). After only two weeks, the old domain and content were gone from search results, and the new site climbed to its original place.
-
thank you @smdaymeansnever. Would you recommend deleting my old URL as all the content has shifted to my new URL anyway?
-
If you’re not using it, it’s not being tracked by search engines (via timethief’s excellent comment about hidden vs private blogs), and you’re not being linked to by dozens of sites yet—then, yes, I would go ahead and delete it.
Someday when you have oodles of extra time, you can read old threads in the earliest forums about how all of our “space junk” floating around in cyberspace slows down the internet as a whole. Of course, this is from a time period where only the coolest kids had 56k modems. You know, the really fast ones!
-
Thank you for all your help, perhaps I should have chosen another title for the post. This is my second blog and really glad that I asked for advice at this point. I won’t ask what year these old threads would be from, but will bear it in mind! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Hi Heather,
It looks like you successfully deleted your old blog address. It will take a bit of time for search engines to update their results with links to your newest blog and to remove links to your deleted blog. If you would like, you can manually request the removal of your old site from Google here:

Let me know if you need anything else!
