I would like to add a “Word of the Day” Widget…

I tried doing it with a text widget but it did not show up. Help?

You’ll need to use a pre-existing “word of the day” RSS feed and the RSS widget.
You can’t put javascript into WordPress blogs.

Can you post the code here. Maybe it’s javascript code which isn’t allowed on WordPress.com due to security reasons. Unless you host your own blog yourself, then you should ask at the WordPress.org forum : http://wordpress.org/support/

The thing about the feed + widget is that the widget only displays the title. It doesn’t give the option to display the description. I wanted to do the same thing, but saw it only shows the word. I had the same problem with Quote of the Day (shows the person’s name, but not the actual quote). It’d be nice if the RSS widget had a configuration option to display the description under the link instead of being only in the tooltip for the link.

These are the limitations that we must live with at wordpress.com. It’s a shared multi-user blogging platform. If you would like to make suggestions to to staff about what would be nice please use the feedback button on the top right hand corner of any admin side blog page to share your ideas with them.
The alternative to living with the limitations pertaining to this multiuser blogging platform is to hire a web host and download free standing wordpress.org software. That way all of these doodads become available to you and the only security that can be compromised is your own.
