I would like to add some kind of wiki or knowledge base feature

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to add some kind of wiki or knowledge base feature in one of my blogs.
We are a group of gear-head friends who each has tremendous knowledge about classic cars.
The idea is to have a platform (elementary) for creating relevant topics and sharing knowledge.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks,
    Byron

    Hi Byron,

Just to make sure we’re on the same page, the goal would be for readers to be able to create their own profile and post forum topics to your site. Is that correct?

    Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for the interest to answer and assist.
Yes, ideally that would be the best scenario.
As a Wiki flavored solution, yes we wish to have the ability for our members to share their individual knowledge with the rest of aficionados (and the wider public in a read only approach); having said that, we also are in quest of a user-friendly platform.

    Best, BER

    Hi Byron!

The best way to set this up on WordPress.com is to invite all your members/aficionados as Editor users onto your site. Each member will need to create their own WordPress.com account, then accept your invitation to become an Editor user. Being an editor, they can then create or edit any of the pages and posts on your site, but leave the Administrator (you) in control of the sites’ settings.

The general public would then access the site only as read-only, but would not be able to create a profile for themselves.

If you want to mimic the technical look of wiki, zBench is a good theme to use too.

The downside to this setup, is that an Administrator user must invite/approve the new Editors — as opposed to new members being able to create a new profile themselves, like on Wikipedia. If you want anyone to be able to create a new profile, I’d recommend a self-hosted setup, using Buddypress.

    Thanks Alex,
I looked at Buddypress and it seems that it would be a good solution.
In my dashboard I do not see the option for plugins.
Does this option come only in the Premium version of WP? (I am running the Free option).
How do I start implementing Buddypress?
    Thanks a lot (y)

Sadly, we don’t allow outside plugins to be installed here on WordPress.com, even with the Premium or Business plan. If you’d like to run BuddyPress for that full-scaled solution you’ll need a self-hosted website running the WordPress.org software:

    WordPress.com and WordPress.org

Then you can install BuddyPress onto that site:

    Getting Started

If you need a free option, and that workaround here on WordPress.com doesn’t fit the bill, there other free wiki creators out there, like Wikia.

    Thanks again Alex,
Useful tips, I will be looking into them deeper in order to make a celection.
