I would like to archive my whole blog, keep the current domain and use next year

I would like to be able to archive all of the content on the current blog – name it say, 2010/2011 and then have an empty shell/blog to start again for next year, 2011/2012 and so on.
What is the easiest way to do this so that the domain: http://nclurbandesign.org/ can be used again with a link in the sidebar to 2010/2011 content. Do I need to register again for another blog, export and import all content?

Thanks for taking time to read this.

    Cheers,
    Ashley

Why do you want to kill your site’s search engine rankings? What about other sites that have linked to you?

If you want to “archive” the site, then just leave it as it is on the current domain with a notice to that effect: “We’re on hiatus until further notice. Check back later for a link to our new site or follow our RSS feed to catch our announcement!”

Then, when you’re ready to start again, you can simply start a new WordPress.com blog and use domain mapping to connect it to the new site and link to the old site and content in the sidebar.

Others may have different solutions, but those are my pre-coffee thoughts.

Justjennifer – Thanks for that. As you suggested I think there is no way around the creation of a new blog. Unless anyone knows different?

    Thanks.

Are you going to use the blog for the same general subject?

If so why be very fancy – just put a Post up “On Vacation, Sabbatical and such – stay tuned for our great re-entry” or what ever and when you feel like starting to Post again just start Posting – maybe with a short note that “We Be Back” – make sure you have an email subscription widget and RSS Widget so people can still subscribe and be notified when you start Posting again.

The older Posts will push off the front page when new material appears – no need to send anyone to a separate site for the history – if they want the older material they can just page back and see what was written in the past.

You could make some new Categories “Old” and “New” and when you start Posting again have a new home page that only displays “New” Category Posts – probably need a custom menu for that but not too hard to do – not sure if the Bulk Edit would allow all the old Posts to have a new Category added in one quick click.
