    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

Sorry, I am not sure what you’re trying to achieve. But it seems like you are looking to create category pages.

If you want to display your categories on your menu and when its clicked, all the posts that belong to that category are listed.

If this is what you are looking to do, then please refer to the steps mentioned here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#category-pages-and-menus

    Thanks!

Thank you so much, I’ve tried that. What Id like is if when clicking on a category, you could then have a list of the names of each of the blogs so that those browsing could go to a category, click on it and then see a list of all the poetry as an example- name and date. I can see from your directions that I get a drop down box linked to each category but don’t seem to be able to list content within that category
    Thanks for trying to help

  • Pardon me, I am still a bit confused about your request.

From my understanding, it seems like you want a setup so that when we click on a category, it will only list the post Title and Date.

If this is what you are looking to do, you will have to create pages and use the Blog Post Block inside those pages, to list posts from specific categories and turn off all options except the post Title and Date.

Here are the steps you can follow for that:

    1. Go to My Site > Pages > Add New
    2. Give the page title as your Category (For example: “Poetry”)
    3. On the content area, click the “+” icon and search for “Blog Posts Block”
    4. Click on the Block to add it to your page
    5. Click on the Blog Posts Block and on the right sidebar (if you do not see any sidebar, click the “⚙️” (gear) icon at the top right corner) – on the “Categories” field, add the category name (Example: “Poetry”)
    6. Scroll down to “Post Control Settings” and turn off “Show Excerpts”
    7. Scroll down to “Post Meta Settings” and turn off “Show Author”

This will only show the post title and date from that specific category.

Here’s more information on how to use the Blog Post Block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/

Thank you so much for trying to help me.
What I’m looking to do is to have a drop down list of all posts within a category.
    So as an example
Category called ‘poetry’ when reader clicks on poetry they get a drop down list with the title of each poem and date published.
    Click on poetry
List of 5 poems appears as drop down
Click on title of poem that interests
    Opens that poem.

  • Thanks for the detailed explanation.

To achieve this, first, you have to create category pages, please refer to the steps mentioned here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#category-pages-and-menus

After creating the category pages, please follow these steps:

    1. Go to My Site > Appearance > Customize
    2. Go to Menus
    3. Select the menu to edit
    4. Click on Add Items
    5. Expand the Posts panel and add the posts you want to display as a dropdown under your category (eg. If you have added the category “Poetry” in your menu, then add “After the Strom” post to the menu)
    6. Now you can reorder the menu items (i.e. Nest “After the Storm” menu item under “Poetry”) by simply dragging the menu items or clicking on the Reorder option.
If you don’t how to reorder the menu items, please follow the steps mentioned here: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/#reorder-menu-items

Technically, the date won’t be added to the menu items. You can add them manually by editing the navigation labels.

    I hope this helps :)

    Hi sarahburgessparker281217,

I understand what you’re trying to achieve.

I would suggest finding a theme that supports drop-down menus.
You’d be able to make custom drop-down menus that list categories like ‘poetry’ containing subcategories like blog posts.

Here’s a helpful article on finding the right theme for you:

    I hope this helps.

    Hi @sarahburgessparker281217,

My apologies, the suggestion that @thisissandipmondal has provided is the most straightforward way to handle it.

Just tested it out myself and was able to change the navigation labels to display whatever I wanted.

Thank you both for your time and explanations.
    Such patience
    Success.
Just going to play with fonts for category headings now to make a little clearer.
So grateful and you’ve prevented a divorce 😉
