If you change the URL you will lose all pagerank. If you move off Wp.com you will need a custom URL, so you will lose all pagerank. That is why we advise people to buy a custom domain and mapping and use them here as early as possible. That way if you ever do leave, the drop is only temporary and within a couple of days you’ve got your regular pagerank back.

If I move my entire site, getting page rank back shouldn’t be too much of a problem, right?
I’d also like to know: how do I move my site (includes getting a new registered domain name and hosting) and set up redirect so that anyone coming to read my posts gets forwarded to my new site?

If you move your entire site to a new URL, you will be up to six months getting pagerank back, regardless of hosting.
How do you move your site? You buy web hosting, install software from WordPress.org in it, buy a domain name and attach it to the site, then on the blog here, go to the dashboard Tools page and create an Export file that includes all media. Then on the dashboard of the new site, Import that file. Then on the old blog, purchase a Redirect Upgrade to redirect readers to your new blog.

Raincoaster, is that what you did with your site – or did you just get a domain name? I ask because I visited your site and saw that I had the option to “like” your post. I also had the option to follow you. I’m curious because I want to have these same options when I move my site.
Also, I live in Canada and so want to get Canadian hosting from somewhere. Do you have any recommendations for me? I’ve been looking at a few different places, but have not made any decisions yet.
I really appreciate your help. Thanks for everything!
