  Instead of taking down the website for maintenance, maybe you could just change the settings on who could view them.

  Through your dashboard, under Settings>Reading, a menu will appear that you can adjust the availability of your website to the public. (Under the heading: Site Visibility).

  I recommend to set it to “I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose”, this way if you want others to help adjust your blog, you can invite them to do so, but the website will not be public for others to see.

  I use this method when I am testing blogs. This is an easier method to restrict visibility to your website while you are working on it: instead of disabling your site, and possibly losing your domain name (which can not be reused).
