    Hello there,

Please clarify some details for me:

Transfer/move my entire blog structure behind one link, and create an entirely different focal point for my blog site.

What type of link do you mean? Where would the link be located? Will the blog still be visible to the public, or do you want it hidden?

I’m wondering if you want to use your custom domain name, connexions21.com, with a new WordPress.com site? If so, this is totally possible. I simply need you to register a new WordPress.com site, give me its name, and I can transfer the domain to it.

To register a new WordPress.com site, please click this link:
    https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/?ref=calypso-sites

Thanks so much! Let me know how I can help further. All the best :)

    Hello

Happiness Engineer ??? Wow! I love that title. Well I am sure you can help me. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

I would like to continue to use the existing site template but I want to link the current site behind one of the main buttons across the top. That was the plan I had in my tiny mind. But it may not be possible.

I really don’t want to learn a new template. That would also allow me to carry on with a new focus without losing any traction. I was also interested in doing this without a lot of reworking of the existing content to sort of ‘put it behind one closet door’.

If I start a new wordpress site, can I just copy the existing one and link from it to the old site, and bit by bit eliminate old content on the new version, which would leave me with the same look and feel and structure, and then build the new content on this new site.

I would also want to make the old site fully public, as well as the new one.

Other ‘wants’ and ‘would likes’ include: keeping the domain name, and keeping the site name (which is the same as the domain) for the new site. I would slightly alter the old site name – in name only (if you know what I mean).

I hope this is making sense to you as even I am starting to confuse myself. It is not easy to describe without the body language. :)

    thanks

    Grayley

    Hey Grayley!

Ha! Sometimes body language would definitely help, wouldn’t it? I think that’s why people use so many emojis :)

I read through your last response carefully, and I think I’ve come up with a plan.

Here are the steps, let me know what you think:

    1. Register a new site, and install the same theme (iTheme2) that you’re using on your current site. This way, you won’t have the learning curve with a new theme.
    2. Set up your new site. Add a menu item — let’s call it Old Site, for now — that appears in the top menu bar. You will do that with a custom link, as explained here:

      Menus

You will want to make sure to link that menu item to your WordPress.com site URL (http://connexions21.wordpress.com/), rather than your custom domain name.

    3. Move your existing domain from your old site to your new site. I can help with this, or you can follow the Transfer Upgrades instructions in this link:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/

    4. Alter the old site’s name. You can keep the .wordpress.com site URL, or add a new custom domain name to it.

Both sites can be visible, and indexable by search engines. What do you think?

Does it sound like this will cover all your needs? Please let me know! Let me know if you have concerns or questions.

    Thanks!

    Sounds great!

I will get at it later today. And yes, I will want your help in moving the domain name.

Thanks ever so much, this is so appreciated.

Grayley, It’s my pleasure. I’m happy to help. Just drop me a line when you’re ready to go.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    Hello again,

I am not getting much happiness this morning. I tried to follow your instructions but I got stuck/confused at 1st base. In your step 1, I clicked on your (iTheme) link, and it gave me my existing site with a menu on the side. I did not expect to see my existing site as i thought I was starting a new site.

Then I got into a ‘clicking for life’ pattern and ended up in ‘making and buying a new domain land’. Oops, got out of there.

Then panic/cognitive crash occurred and I decided to write you. Where did I go wrong? Do you have WordPress for Dummies?

Let me know if you think I am worth rescuing.

    cheers

    Grayley

    Grayley,

Consider me your own WordPress.com for Dummies :)

Let’s just break this down a bit more. First, you do need to register a new site.

When I look at your account it seems you may have accomplished this a few hours ago. I see this site:

    http://elementaryresourcesdotnet.wordpress.com/

It’s not too pretty yet, but don’t worry at all about that part. The good news is that you actually did accomplish step 1!

Next, you’ll pick a theme for this site. I’m going to teach you a different way than before. Click the link below:

    https://elementaryresourcesdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?search=itheme

Hover your cursor over the iTheme box and then click the Activate button.

Once you’ve done that, you’re all set on the theme.

If you’d like a hand in transferring the domain connexions21.com to your new site, let me know. I can assist with this.

I’ll keep an eye out for your response. Thanks much!

    Hi
I think there is still something missing in the communication or in my expectations. I now have a site called elementaryresourcesdotnet which is a blank iTheme2 site. What happened to my old site and content? (I see it still resides at connexions21.com)

My intent was to link from my new site to the old site. I think we (or I) have it backwards. The ‘original site’ was called Connexions 21. I want to keep that name for my new site, and move the original content and theme to a new address and link to it from the new site.

The end goal is a new site called Connexions 21 that I will build using iTheme2, I will have a link from this site to my original site, now named Elementary School Resources. ( I was hoping to preserve the look and feel that I had for the original site to use for the new site).

And yes, whatever transfer of domain needs to happen, I would really appreciate assistance with that. However, I think we need to resolve the above first.

Is it possible that once we change the assignment of the domain name, then I can change the site names afterwards? The blog site names are now applying to the wrong sites….. am I reading this correctly?

Is this getting any less muddy? Do you wish I never had posted my request? :)

    cheers

    Grayley

    Hey Grayley!

I still think I understand your goal! It just needs to be taken care of step by step. Nothing will look quite right until we’re done.

You mentioned wanting to build a new site. The new site will link to your old site. We’re still absolutely on track to do that.

You created that new site in order to add all new content, in my understanding. Once it’s filled with all your new content, we can add that link to your old site. We can even add a link before you’re done building, if you like.

I can transfer the domain name Connexions21.com to your new site whenever you want. However, don’t forget, it doesn’t have any content yet, so when visitors go to Connexions21.com, it’ll be empty. If you’d like, I can wait on moving the domain name until you’re ready for the new site to go live.

Regarding the old site’s name: you can change it at any time. If you want to change its WordPress.com address (connexions21.wordpress.com), you can follow these instructions:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

Or, if you’d like to give it a new custom domain name (elementaryresources.net, for example), you can do that by clicking the link below, and then registering a new domain name.

    https://connexions21.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

It is absolutely fine to add a new domain name before I’ve transferred the old one. Just don’t cancel the old one. We need it to stay in good standing in order to transfer it to your new site.

Let me know if we’re on the same page!

If we are, the next steps are to add new content to your new site, change the old site’s name, and move the domain (connexions21.com) to your new site.

Drop me a line with any questions, or when you’re ready to keep moving forward. Thanks!

    Hi Robyn

Sorry for the hiatus…. diversions come easy around here and my comp died so have had my laptop in for surgery etc. Thank you for your last message. I followed your instructions regarding the intended theme activation from 2 messages back but that took me to a screen with no ‘next step’ or basically no place to make the next move. (complete, save, continue whatever)

At this moment if I go to this address it is still the original site and theme:
    http://connexions21.com/

the following address takes me to what I was hoping would be the new home of the original site.
    http://elementaryresourcesdotnet.wordpress.com/
and of course it currently has a no content.

In retrospect, or forwardspect, I think I should have left all as it was, then created a new site (workplace learning) and put a link from it to the original site. With your help I probably could have changed the address and name of the workplace site to the original connexions21 address, and then change the address of the original elementary site and link to it from the new workplace site.

As I write this, I think…. oh my god do I even know what I am saying know. Its depressing to find yet another learning disability. I thought I was somewhat of an intermediate technobot.

After you stop shaking your head, maybe you could confirm what we do next if the above is indeed doable.

    Holiday cheers

    Grayley

    Hey Grayley!

Welcome back. Sorry to hear about the emergency computer surgery! Hope all is working well now.

I’m happy to help, of course!…but I’m not sure what you want me to do. Did you still want to create a link from http://elementaryresourcesdotnet.wordpress.com/ to your old site at http://connexions21.com/?

Let me know in detail how you want your sites to behave, and we’ll figure out a way to make you happy. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you!
