I your blog is private, who needs hiderefer.com

I’d be grateful for a clarification on hiderefer.com privacy preference. After reading the threads about hiderefer.com I still have this question:

If my blog is private and only those I designate can read it, why do I need hiderefer.com? If I put a link in my blog, and I have turned off hiderefer, the site at the other end of that link knows the URL of my blog. But why would that be a problem? They can’t read my blog because it’s private, right? What could they do with the knowledge of my blog’s URL that would be detrimental to me?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Because if someone clicks a link in your private blog to an outside site, then that outside site see your blog URL as the referrer. They might not be able to view your private blog, but they will know it exists and know the URL of the blog.

If you don’t want anyone but the people you have invited to know about your blog, then hidereferer.com insulates you and no one will see the URL for your blog in their referrers.

If you do not care if someone knows of your blog then disable it..

Please forgive me if I seem dense, but what does the knowledge that my blog exists do for anyone who’s not on my list of allowed viewers? If I am king of an impregnable castle, do I care about the enemy knights riding by on the road? Whether they can see the walls of my castle or it is invisible doesn’t seem to be material to my safety.

Some people want to keep things as invisible as they possibly can. Perhaps they have used their name in the URL, or perhaps something that someone would recognize as uniquely them which could be used to identify them. hiderefer.com takes care of that.

    Think of it this way:

Let’s say you look in your blog stats and see a referal from a blog where the post was “One funny guy” or “Weird” or “This is just stupid” or “This is really great” you would be curious as to what was actually in those posts that linked to you.

Or let’s say you have a blog which is friends-only but mentions work. If you write a post called “My boss is a moron” you don’t really want that url escaping into the wild. Sure they can’t see the blog or the post but they can see that title.
