Ideas for new themes
-
I wondered what is the process one would go through to suggest new themes for wordpress. I heard and this is second hand of course that one can get paid for themes that they create and wordpress uses and people download and use. I don’t know if that is how it works or not. I am just asking how it all works. I am not techie enough to get into the guts of a wordpress blog to change the theme but I have had some what I thought would be good and popular ideas for themes that may be popular. At least they are ones I would like to use and I don’t mean so narrow in focus that only a few would like I mean a LOT of people would like.
Thanks in advance for answering my question.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

On wordpress.com we can only use the themes listed under Appearance > Themes from your dashboard. If you want to suggest a wordpress.org theme that you like for inclusion then the best place to do that is the Themes Forum. It might be worth searching the forums for the theme you like by name as someone might have suggested it before.

As far as “selling” themes, it is actually not legally possible since the themes require wordpress in order to work, and wordpress is open source GPL licensed. This is a real tricky area. Some parts of the theme files can be “owned” by you and under a different license, but not the entire theme.
What people are doing now, is selling a support and free upgrades for life, or for a year, or whatever, but the theme itself has to remain GPL, which means after someone gets hold of it, they can modify it and then give it away as GPL.
WordPress/Automattic has been on a rampage about so-called premium themes that are sold or licensed under a licensing scheme that is more restrictive than GPL, and they have shutdown, or forced several theme authors to back off and offer their themes under GPL.
You really need to look into all the legal stuff on this whole wordpress theme situation and be sure you are very clear about the whole thing. My feeling is that Automattic would be willing to go to court on this. They are very pro open source and GPL.
Do your homework on this.

I should add that since the themes “require” wordpress in order to work, then they automatically must inherit the GPL license that wordpress is under.

His blog is suspended for TOS violation, it would appear he did not do his homework on the TOS.

Yeah, the username made me wonder how long it would last, but I didn’t take a look at it.
