Ideas for Themes

  • Unknown's avatar

I have lot’s of ideas for Themes on WordPress.com. Rounded modules, more choice over fonts to use, more flexible widths especially for the blog area itself. Customizable headers with ability to put my pic over the top as well as the blogs title, More choice of modules to include tweets, facebook, etc, I love Roy Tanks flash flickr photo gadget but it can’t work on here, why not?
Lot’s of choices for colours as well.

Indeed wonderful initiative – thank you.

    Some requests:
    1. Drop down top navigation menus
    2. Ability to optimise pages for search engines better – can’t insert tags into pages just posts
    3. Better widgets for showing slideshows, videos, photos without heavy branding eg vodpod bad, flickr widget good!
    4. Slideshow tool to insert into posts and pages – the slide.com one is ugly
    5. Means to insert buttons for payment into posts and pages eg paypal buttons. Small start-ups and community groups would really benefit – paypal donation buttons don’t fit every case.
    6. One more thing …
I’m just learning CSS to adapt design templates to my needs. Would you be able to give the option to display the /*comments*/ from the template designer so it would be easier to decipher which bit of code refers to which bit of the page design. Some bits of code continue to elude me! It would be good to give designers guidance on making their comments easy to understand.
Whilst on the subject thank you for making CSS so easy to get into – I’ve been really thrilled to get my feet wet through wordpress. I’ll be aiming to learn to create templates from scratch and move on to html before long.

I love wordpress and it’s been a godsend for some of the community groups and artists and nascent businesses I’ve been helping.

Dirty, grunge styles look great on websites. Please ‘Theme Team’ get on the case and create a realy dirty looking grunge theme, maybe based around an old book or scruffy magazine look.

    Thanks

Almost all the themes here were all originally coded to run on free standing wordpress.org software installs. In order to run on wordpress.com software they were “adapted” and some features were eliminated. As this is a WP_MU blogging platform we cannot access and edit the underlying PHP and HTML in the templates. All users of the same theme are in essence using the same template that underlies that theme.

There is a Themes Recommendation thread and Staff lays out the criteria for considering adaptation of any specific theme so it can be run on wordpress.COM software. You will find it here. > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-recommendations?replies=441#post-137345

I’ll followup and say that while I love the theme I have, and lots of the other themes look pretty spiff too, nothing combines /everything/ that I want.

Must-haves for me would be: custom header; widgets; at least 2 columns; DROP DOWN menu for pages – the last is the one that seems rarest.

Would also love custom-colors option, but that’s much less major.

Drop down menus are showing up in many of the new themes that have been released here in the last few months, and there may very likely be a change coming that will allow dropdowns in all themes here with top navigation. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Read through the announcement and staff comments on the new twenty-ten theme just released to get a clue or two as to some stuff coming in the near future.

    @lionandlily

DROP DOWN menu for pages – the last is the one that seems rarest.

Currently, 7 themes have this feature. The iNove, Inuit Types, Monochrome, Neutra, Sandbox 1.6.1, Titan and TwentyTen themes all have dropdown menus to child pages from parent pages in the top horizontal menu.

Garland, Under the Influence and Vigilance have the most color customizable options but aren’t the only themes with color change options.

You can use the search utility and Feature Filters in your Dashboard > Appearance > Browse Themes > Feature Filters to locate themes of interest to you. (A-Z, Popular, Features)

I have been very happy overall with WordPress, but am not wild about any of the WordPress.com themes. At the moment I use Misty Look because it comes closest to what I seek… but…

Attributes I seek (all in one theme):

    – A large enough default font size to be readable on today’s high resolution screens, OR an easy way to change the default font-size blog-wide.

    – Ability to customize font color for headlines, but overall keep the visual “noise” down. I am often attempting to explain complex topics and do not wish to have a reader’s eye distracted by images, colors, or graphic elements beyond what I have placed in my text.

    – A customizable banner image as part of the header – it allows me to use one of my own images to give my blog a unique look

    – Blog name and tag line both visible, and NOT overlaid on the banner

    – Two columns – a primary/wide one for text, with a narrower/widget one to the side

    – Default “Search” and “RSS Feed” links

    – Tag & Category lists at Bottom of post, NOT the top

    – Option to show either excerpts or full posts on main page, and specify the max length of excerpts (in lines visible on page)

    – More visible “Comments” link at the bottom of each post, including the count of comments to date – one that does not get lost in the list of categories and tags.

    – Ability to specify either the maximum number of blog entries that appear at one time, or the maximum length in inches of the blog’s home page

    – Widgets that include a dash or bullet before each item listed, particularly under the blogroll or Links… it is annoying to have a long link name wrap around onto a second line, then have it look like two separate links when in reality it is only one.

I too love blogging on WordPress, but I would love to see a photoblog theme that has an all light or all dark background option. I use Duotone, but sometimes the automatic color background is really painfully wrong!

    Thanks!

I use DePo Square, which i absolutely LOVE!!
My favourite thing about it is the “post type” option. I’d like to see more themes with this option (i think depo square is the only one with this option right now?)…

It’d also be nice if i could customize the colours a little in this theme.

Keep the themes coming, wordpress!! :)
