Idiots guide to getting started

  As the title suggests, I am a newbie. I am looking for basic help, not the avalanche of info on the web site, where it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.

  I have found what appears to be a helpful video on Youtube, from 2022, but it refers to functionality I cannot find on the web site. Tried downloading WordPress, as opposed to just using the browser version, but that is overwhelming is well.

  Example: I tried selecting a few patterns for web pages, and that seemed to work, but there was no option to SAVE and then edit them. I looked everywhere.

  I am looking to build a small, niche web site that doesn’t need bells and whistles. Is there a guide somewhere to do that? Or, failing that, can someone please indicate how to resolve the issue of choosing and then SAVING and EDITING patterns? Thanks in advance.
