IE8 trouble with TwentyFourteen: Sticky posts get odd border and align weird

My company is stuck in IE8. Please don’t judge.

TwentyFourteen looks gorgeous in Chrome and mobile, but many of my desktop viewers for this internal news site are on IE8, which is causing me some odd issues.

    1. I am using the “featured” section for three sticky posts with the grid option. In Chrome they render nicely, flush against one another. In IE8 they get this odd black border and the leftmost one is bumped up for some reason. This is my main concern.

    2. In Chrome, the sidebar is the same color all the way down. In IE8, after the widgets are done it turns black instead of the green I chose. This is a minor concern.

The only CSS customization I have done so far is to add a snippet to change the width and one to remove the featured images from showing on posts (I only want them in the sticky). I have tried removing all this code and re-testing, but there’s no change to the IE8 mess.

Not sure why the link for the third screenshot isn’t working. Trying again.

    Hi there,

I’m sorry, but our newer themes (like Twenty Fourteen) are no longer designed for IE 8 or older. Content should be readable/accessible, but the design may look off due to IE 8’s lack of support for mobile-first design techniques.

Our theme team made this decision after reviewing WordPress.com’s traffic statistics, and found IE 8 users make up a very small and dwindling percentage of the overall user population.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Thanks for responding, Grace! I’ve gone ahead and just stopped using the featured/sticky posts option for now and everything looks fine in IE8 without that piece. It’s just not ideal. Here’s hoping we get upgraded sometime soon.

Sounds great! I hope you do as well! :)
