If current theme changed, some setting lost?

Hey there, my first and experimental blog is on owim1.wordpress.com. I’m using Greyzed Theme. I’ve crated some pages, menus, widgets, still just experimenting — new to WordPress.com.

What happens when I switch from this theme to an another? Do I irrevocably loose some settings?

For instance, If my current theme allowed Left Side Bar Widgets, and the new one has Right Side Widgets — do I lose my widgets? Or, this theme supports multi-level pages. If I choose I theme which doesn’t, what’s gonna happen?

Additionally, I’d like to “backup” my blog before starting making changing. Is there a way to do it?

    Thanks! :)

When we change themes all widgets migrate into the “Inactive Widgets” box here > Appearance > Widgets

When the new theme is activated then all the static pages we created ourseleves, not any that were provided by some themes that have special templates, are preserved as are the posts and all other content.

The new theme will display a “default sidebar display” of what appear to be widgets. They are not actually widgets. All we do is go here Appearnce > Widgets and drag and drop the widgtes we previously created out of the “Inactive Widgets” box into the positions in the sidebars and/or bottom footer bars of the new theme, click save, and click cloes. That’s it.

Be aware that all themes have different features and we cannot retainfeatures that are in one theme and transfer those features into themes that do not have them. Here’s an example. I use Inuit Types and it has static page templates supplied by that theme for Archives and Sitemap. When I change themes to one that does not have such static page templates coded into it the for Archives and Sitemap pages from the Inuit Types theme will disappear. However, all other static pages I created that were not the product of special feature templates will be there.
