If I buy a custom domain, will it change my domain or just re-direct to it?

    I want to buy a custom domain so that I change my domain and drop the ‘.wordpress’. I do not yet want to buy the personal plan, just the domain from WordPress. If I do, will it actually change the domain of my site? Or will it be more like you type in the new domain I bought and then it just redirects you to the ‘.wordpress’ site?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    That is exactly what will happen. You need a paid plan to set the custom domain as the primary domain. Anyway a custom domain is included free for the first year with any paid plan so why buy a domain and then buy a plan later.
