if i buy a domain will i need later to buy a plan too?

I am trying to upgrade my blog and buy my own domain (amorvidayzen.com) in order to monetize it. But i dont understand the difference between paying 18$ a year for my domain or paying 99$ a year for the premium plan that includes the personalized domain.
Can i just pay the 18$ or will i need the features offered by the premium plan for my blog to properly work and be able to monetize it?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You do not require a Premium upgrade to apply for the only advertising program here which is WordAds. What is required is that the blog is on its own domain and has enough traffic to be accepted into that program.

All that changes when you are domain mapping is the URL and nothing else. The content stays exactly where it is. What domain mapping does its create a seamless transfer between the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs to the new domain URLs no matter where they are on the internet. Visitors who click the underlying .wordpress.com blog URLs will be seamlessly redirected to the exact same content under the new domain URLs.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
