  if i buy a theme, can i upload it to a different host that supports wordpress

  No. The premium themes have been altered so they work with our multi-user platform (wordpress.com). If you move to wordpress.org you will have to buy the theme from its designer.

  Though wp.com and wp.org have “WordPress” in their names, they are very different:

  WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
