If I cancel my paid domain, can I get the free one back with all its contents?

I am planning to purchase my own domain in wordpress.com to persolnalize my blog but would like to know if it is possible to cancel the domain payment, lets say a few years later and get the free one back with all my blog contents still intact.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The contents are safe – all that your own domain name does is change the name on the front door – you would still manage your blog from the original address ( breathewalklove.wordpress.com/ ) – if you cancel a custom domain name the custom name just goes away and your content is safe and where it always was – BUT all the links will be broken since people will have bookmarked your custom domain name as will search engines have indexed your site under the mapped domain name – so your traffic will go to zero and you start all over with search engines etc to get your blog indexed again
