If I cancel my upgrade and move to WordPress.org, can I keep my domain name?
-
I signed up with WordPress.com, but realized that I really want WordPress.org. I purchased a domain name through WordPress.com and really want to keep the domain name. Is there a reason why I wouldn’t be able to purchase the domain name after I cancel my WordPress.com account?
I am still within the 48 hour window to cancel and receive a refund, but am just concerned by the warning that I may not be able to get my chosen domain name.

When a domain name is canceled, it becomes the property of our registrar partner, and is returned to the public market only at their discretion.
If you’d like, I can cancel and refund the rest of the bundle for $73.
As for the domain, if we cancel the domain, it can take up to several weeks, and we can’t guarantee that your domain will be available to you again once canceled.
If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it.
Instead, you can move the domain to another site, using the Domain Administration tool under Store > Domains, at the bottom of the page.
Please let us know how you’d like to proceed!

Can you give me a quick comparison between WordPress.com and WordPress.org? What would cause me to choose one over the other?

Ok, one more question re something I didn’t see addressed in the support forum: Can I advertise (i.e., earn money thru ads) with WordPress.com? I know that the premium bundle removes WordPress ads, but I want to hopefully have ads in order to make a profit. Thanks!

We do have an advertising program called WordAds, which you read more about at http://wordads.co/
Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed. For full details, please see:
http://support.wordpress.com/advertising/
http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/If you require other advertising, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on advertising if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.
Please see this link to learn about the differences:

Ok final question! If I do switch to WordPress.org, but want to keep my domain name, will the host site be wordpress.com? Don’t I need a host site like Hostgator or Go Daddy? Can wordpress.com be my host site for my wordpress.org blog??
