If I change my site's adress, does the old adress still work?

I made a site about a year ago that has gained a really nice following. However I always used the wordpress domain and I was starting to think about getting a new adress that begins with www. and ends with .com, for a more traditional website adress.

However, since my website already has gained quite the following (and most people acess it through the adress) I was wondering if changing my adress would make the old adress still work and redirect people to the newer one. For example, say that my current adress is example.wordpress.com. If I change it to http://www.example.com, would typing in ‘example.wordpress.com’ still take me there? Or what would happen instead?

    Thanks in advance

That is a service WordPress provides: to direct traffic from example.wordpress.com to your new domain (example.com). That is a called a site redirect.
