If I changed my menu, will WordPress redirect outside links?

  • Unknown's avatar

My site has been up for almost a year and I have outside links going to a number of the pages. If I move some of my pages under a sub menu, currently they are just under the main menu, will WordPress automatically redirect the outside links?

I also will need to rename a few of the pages. Will these be redirected or will the outside link get an error when clicked?

for example this page http://crochetbydarleenhopkins.com/patterns/bib-polar-bear-and-penguin/ I would like to add a submenu and rename to this http://crochetbydarleenhopkins.com/patterns/bibs/bib-penguin/

My theme does allow menu customization-customized visualize theme.
    Thank you.

  • I would encourage you not to change URL’s of posts that have been published for any length of time. It destroys any search engine ranking that the page may have had. And there is no easy way to have visitors to the old URL be redirected to the new one.

Is there a particular reason why you want to change the URLs? You do not need to change URLs to make new navigation menus or submenus.

Just changing a bunch of links is real bad – I fixed two Pages with real bad names (test-page-2 for instance) (yes sometimes I was not the most brilliant when I started my site) – I made a new page with the correct title and copied all the old content to the new Page, then I edited to old page (kept the old page URL so I would not get a 404 page not found error) down to just a note that the content had been moved with a link to the new Page

As staff-ozmodiar notes – changing URL’s will trash the Search Engine Ranking –

You have an organizing issue – you might be able to do some of what you want buy using a Parent / Child relationship with the pages. Or Make new Pages with the proper classification (Bibs ??) – then put links like you are doing now to the pattern pages that are Bibs – don’t change the URL of the Pages, just the pages you use to reference the Pages with Patterns on them.

I hope that makes a bit of sense

Yes, I have organizing issues! And I guess I’m asking two questions.

Sounds like I shouldn’t change the name or URL of anything. I ask because I currently list a bib pattern that includes both a penguin and a polar bear design. I plan to break them out and list the penguin separately and the polar bear separately (doing this with all my sets)-this is why I wanted to rename the URL so it only names one, not both designs. I guess I’ll leave the URL as is and just change the content to reflect one design only and then add a new page with the other design. It may cause some confusion if someone clicks a link looking for the penguin and polar bear only shows up but I guess that is better than broken links or losing ranking- Do you agree?

Second issue-still a little confused. Right now my menu is Patterns->individual pattern listings. Can I add Patterns->Bibs->move all bib designs from directly under patterns to under Bibs. This will change the path, correct? Will WordPress redirect any outside link that is set prior without the submenu?

My collection has doubled over the year and as well as it is going, I’m going to continue adding so I’ve got to get better organizing.
    Thank you.

I would just leave the original and if you really want, create two new posts which each link back to the earlier one.

OK, this finally clicked for me. I was confusing the page attributes with moving the custom menu around. I created a submenu and noticed the URL didn’t change, I thought it would.

Now I just need to figure out what to do with the pattern name changes without changing page name/URL.

Thank you all for you help.

Would this work-may be what you all have been saying all along but it’s slowly sinking in. If I keep the original URL (with updated content) that has the outside links to it published but don’t include it in my custom menu, the links to it will still work, but it won’t appear on the site anywhere, correct? and they can still navigate around my site? Then I can create two new pages and add them to the new menu?
