If I delete a pic from the media library,..

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to create more room in the media library by getting rid of the many images I won’t be using more than the once, but I don’t want said pics to be removed from the post or page where they’re currently being used. My media library is annoyingly full. I’d love to be able to shuffle like images into their own files to neaten everything up, but I don’t see that as an option.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you delete images from your media library, they will not be available on your posts and pages. When you load a post, the wp.com software goes to the library to get the picture to load with the text. Just like a real library, if a book is discarded then it is no longer available for circulation.

:( Crap…that’s what I was afraid of. Thank you so much for the confirmation, though – I really appreciate it.

(Insert lots of grumbling about how clogged up my media library is getting…)

Just for my own interest, but have you loaded lots of very large image files to your library? Perhaps when you started? You should be able to have thousands of pictures with the 3GB per blog on wp.com site with properly sized and compressed files.

Not really; the only things I’ve loaded are “medium and smaller sized” pics, and a couple of .gifs. I’m just wanting to clean up, pare down, and simplify the area where the pics live.

I’d so love it if we could create files so that we could store similar pics together…granted, I’d end up with 250 files, but that’d be ok. It’d be so much easier to locate what I’m looking for that way rather than having to scroll…and scroll…and scroll…

Files are definitely the answer, lol. Thanks for asking!

I have over 4000 images and as long as you make a descriptive title when you upload them, the search function can find them easier.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh…huh. Had NOT thought of that. Thanks for the tip!

I made the mistake on an early blog of just sending up the pictures without fixing the size first – the pictures were about 3 mb each – which by today’s standard is small – so 600 or so burned through 62% before I got wise – thankfully it was a temporary site while things were swapped to a new server after a couple of years – so not used any more

That’s definitely a good thing to keep in mind so as to not burn through the storage any quicker than you’re already going to.

Large images also slow load time down which upsets many visitors

TRUE! I hate waiting for anything to load (I’m gladly spoiled).

Image URL’s? What *is* this magic? I’ll definitely have to look into that. Thanks!

@meridiean, I just check the blogs on your account, and they all have quite a bit of space left to upload more files to the Media Library. Is there a particular blog you are concerned about? If so, you can send me a link to that blog and I’ll be happy to take a look. :) You can also check the upload space by going to Media Library in your dashboard.

If you are more concerned about losing track of files or filling up your Media Library at some point in the future, I recommend using some of the other tips mentioned in this thread. Cheers! :)

Thanks for your reply, Rachel! Boiled down, my problem = frustrated OCD, lol.

In a perfect world, I’d be able to sort all like photos and .gifs into their own happy little overly-organized file homes, and neaten everything up. But, since that’s not an option (yet?), I’d fantasized about just being able to delete the pics/.gifs I’d planned to only use once just to get them “out of the way”.

    Reality: 2 Both dreams: 0

    Thanks for your help! :D
