If I delete media files do the images dlete from my posts too?

If I delete media files do the images disappear from my posts or does this simply make way for more images in my library whilst retaining display of those already uploaded?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes of course they’ll disappear. Your media library is the list of the files you have uploaded: if you delete a file from the media library, it’s no longer an uploaded file, it’s a nonexistent file.

You’ve been wasting your storage space by uploading huge files. Before I say more on this: each image in your posts currently links to a larger view of the image alone when clicked; is this intentional or not?

I certainly don’t need the images to do that but didn’t know I could prevent it. If I can reduce storage space by doing so with existing files and by uploading smaller files in future, I am keen to hear how. Thanks for your response.

Is there a quick way to restore the ones I have already deleted? So far they still appear in th eposts but perhaps it’s just a matter of time before they disappear.

I also have multiple copies of the photos I have used as featured images – one for each post where they appear. Is there any way of dealing with that?

Yes, images don’t have to be clickable. See here:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/images-the-three-link-options/

But this by itself doesn’t have any effect on the storage space you’ve used. My question had to do with what the right width of the images you upload should be. Since you don’t want the images to be clickable, the right width shouldn’t be larger than the maximum for the theme you’re using. See here:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/23/maximum-image-width/

So, in order not to waste space, you should use an image editing application to downsize copies of your images to the right width, and upload and insert those copies. This will also result in faster loading time, as well as better quality on the post (because images downsized by WP lose some color and sharpness).

No, there’s no quick way to restore the images you have deleted: you have to reupload and reinsert them one by one.

If you’re still seeing images you have deleted, you’re looking at a cached view of your blog.

As justpi says prior to uploading any image into your blog, regardless if it’s a header image, a featured image, an image in a post or page, in a Post format (Gallery or Image), an image for sidebar display in an image widget or a text widget, you can optimize and re-size it in either a desktop image editing software or online image editing software to fit the space you intend to use it in.

Thank you both for responding so quickly. There is much to learn about blogging – better get down to it.
