It seems that they are linking. I thought I was doing all of my posts in BlueHost on http://www.meeandmerlot.com (the domain I bought) but it turns out it also is posting the same content on my http://www.meeandmerlot.wordpress.com site. How do I get rid of the .wordpress.com site

Are you using http://www.meeandmerlot.com on a self-hosted WordPress version or just the domain is registered with Bluehost and you use it on WordPress.com?

meeandmerlot.wordpress.com and meeandmerlot.com are two completely different sites.
meeandmerlot.wordpress.com is hosted here on WordPress.com, whereas meeandmerlot.com is hosted by Bluehost.
If you don’t want the one on WordPress.com, then you can either hide it by making it private (https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/) or delete it completely (https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/).
