If I have a domain name do i need hosting?

  I want to have a domain name instead of a .wordpress URL but I just want to check if that means I also need to buy hosting and use FTP or just use the wordpress blogging format.

  Hi. Not necessarily. You can purchase the domain mapping option and your domain name will replace your existing __.wordpress.com address. No FTP required, no separate hosting needed:
