If I register a domain, will traffic to my old url be redirected to the new one?
-
Hi,
I’m interested in registering the domain animalactionist.com but I just got a heap of business cards printed that have the existing animalactionist.wordpress.com address on it. So my question is, if I register the new domain, will the old address still work for my site visitors?
Thanks for your help.

Technically, they’ll actually be the same blog, but animalactionist.com will appear in place of animalactionist.wordpress.com.
Think of animalactionist.com as a fancy new coat for animalactionist.wordpress.com.

Thanks Macmanx, so just to be clear (excuse my apparent inability to grasp this fully), if someone enters http://www.animalactionist.wordpress.com – they will still go to my blog, even though the new address is http://www.animalactionist.com? So both URL’s will point to the same website?
Thank you so much for helping me with this, and sincere apologies if this is a silly question.
:D

ok I went ahead and registered animalactionist.com and all looks good except… it only links to my site if you enter http://animalactionist.com or animalactionist.com – however if you enter http://www.animalactionist.com it does not work. Is that normal? I actually wanted the www. address. :(

Yes, when you setup WordPress.com domain mapping, both animalactionist.com and animalactionist.wordpress.com would point to the same website.
The www version of the domain should redirect to the non-www version. Here at WordPress.com, we don’t use www in any URLs.
To make animalactionist.com the primary domain, you can update the settings on the Store → Domains page inside your blog dashboard.
